Bergamasco – Description
The Bergamasco is an ancient breed dating to before the Roman Empire. Its heritage is evident in the dog’s noble demeanor. The Bergamasco is very dignified, and sometimes a bit stubborn, especially if asked to do something it considers demeaning. It is not interested in pointless tricks. Otherwise, the Bergamasco is very quick to learn, and as a herding dog, it aims to please its owner. It enjoys meaningful work; if you can motivate the Bergamasco, the dog will work with you in every way to the best of its size, agility and endurance. When people ask me about the personality and ability of the Bergamasco, I tell them that the dog can be taken anywhere, and has both the physical and mental capacity for any job, with the exception of water rescue. This is because the Bergamasco has a long, heavy, woolly coat that is not suitable for water. Some Bergamascos enjoy playing in the water and wading in the shallows of the beach; others do swim for longer trips, though that is not typical.
The Bergmasco breed is native to Italy, where historically it worked along side the shepherd. The Bergamasco functions as both a shepherd and a flock guardian, having been bred and shaped for that task over the centuries. It is a medium-sized dog, not too heavy to be able to run for long periods of sheep herding. Its coat is designed specifically for warmth and protection in the cold mountains. The coat is very weather-resistant, and the oil of the coat prevents the dog from getting completely wet. On cold days, the coat keeps the dog warm; on hot days, it protects it from heat. Because of this, Bergamascos do not suffer as badlly in heat as some breeds, but they will also find shade if they are too hot.The Bergamasco has a so-called "double-coat", which has evolved to protect the dog from predators. The coat is abundant in the hind area because, according to the shepherds, wolves attack from behind. When a wolf bites, he cannot reach the skin of the Bergamasco, and ends up with only a mouth full of hair. As an agile dog, the Bergamasco is capable of making lightning-fast turns and counter-attacks. Of course, if traveling in a pack, other Bergamascos will rush to defend the one attacked. Often a Bergamasco is used to herd sheep alongside a Maremma, whose sole purpose is livestock guarding.
A Bergamasco’s hair on the chest through the shoulder area is rougher and should not be flocked to ensure that the dog is able to maneuver difficult terrain. A Bergamasco’s coat on its back, however, should be covered in long and woolly flocks. Rear flocks are formed by the matting of the coarse, barbed hair, resulting in protective plates or cords. Keeping the front hair short enables the dog to be agile. While the hair on its forehead covers its eyes, the Bergamasco has very long eyelashes that keep the hair from getting into the eyes and allows them to see. As I said earlier, the Bergamasco has developed over centuries to do its job and is well-designed from head to toe – after all, it is designed in Italy.
Bergamasco - Character
The Bergamasco is very quick to learn and adapt to new things. As any quick learner, it dislikes repetitions. When teaching a Bergamasco, it is good to remember to go fast, since too much repetition bores the dog and it will lose interest in continuing. A Bergamasco is at its best in sports where it is permitted to use its own head; it likes to problem-solve on its own, and the best reward is companionship with its owner.
The Bergamasco is very attached to his family; it is not exactly a one-person dog, as it considers the whole family is its herd which must be protected. The Bergamasco is great with kids - happy is the child who is allowed to grow with a Bergamasco. There is no better friend and guard than a Bergamasco. The Bergamasco is a gentle, long-spoke wheel, always ready to go around and interact with its owners, but it is also able to calm down, if necessary, and it is very subdued at home indoors. As a herding dog, it gets along well with other family pets. The soul of the Bergamasco is, in fact, very difficult to describe - on one hand the dogis playful and happy; on the other it is serious and proud. This is probably due to its background as a working dog. For the Bergamasco, the only things that matter are work and its’ human(s). Own a Bergamasco and you can throw out all preconceptions about dogs; the Bergamasco is not just anay dog, and I’m sure you’ll be amazed by its nature. It is a fascinating and different breed with an old soul that will makeyou fall unconditionally in love with the breed.
Coat care
As you might guess, mostly questions about the breed are regarding the washing and care of Bergamasco fur.
Grooming is easier than in many other breeds. If the necessary work to establish the coat is done well during the puppy stage, coat care will ultimately be easy and consist mainly of removing twigs and debris from the coat. Bergamasco does not shed - except during the puppy stage.
I am frequently asked whether a Bergamasco can be washed. Bergamascos must be washed. Contrary to rumors, washing does not damage the coat. The coat can be washed whenever you feel the dog is dirty.
Bergamascos today
For a long time, Bergamascos were known only in Italy, mainly in the Bergamo valleys. Fortunately, the breed began to gradually spread to other places, and it is already quite well-known throughout Europe and the USA. When people open their hearts to a Bergamasco, , there's very often no return; it is how it goes. Once you have had a Bergamasco, you will always want one. The kind of friendship and companionship possible with a Bergamasco is hard to imagine having with other breeds; the Bergamasco will simply read your gesture, tone of voice and the look on your face. Nothing is left unnoticed by a Bergamasco, whether it be good or bad, regardless of the situation. Do not ever think that you can fool your dog, on the contrary, it will probably fool you and laugh behind your back.
Bergamasco - rotuesittely
Bergamasco on ikivanha rotu, itseasiassa jo Rooman vallan ajalta – ja se todellakin näkyy koiran olemuksessa – Bergamasco on hyvin itsetietoinen ja välillä vähän alentuvakin, varsinkin jos yrität saada sen tekemään jotain, mikä on sen mielestä aivan toisarvoista. Bergamascolla on niinsanottu ”kaksoisturkki”, joka on kehittynyt suojaamaan koiraa petoeläimiltä – turkki on runsaampaa takaa, koska –paimenten mukaan- susi hyökkää aina takaapäin ja saa suuhunsa vain tukun karvaa – ketteränä koirana Bergamasco pystyy salamannopeasti kääntymään ja tekemään vastahyökkäyksen ja sitten onkin jo kaverit auttamassa – Bergamascoa on hyvin usein käytetty lammaslaumaa turvaamassa yhdessä Maremman kanssa – joka on vain ja ainoastaan laumanvartija. Bergamascon etuosan karva – aina lapoihin asti - on karheampaa eikä mene laatoille niin kuin takaosan pitkä ja villava turkki; myös päässä on karkeampaa turkkia. Takaosan laatat muodostuvat niin että karkea ja villava turkki sekaantuvat toisiinsa ja tuloksena on koiraa suojaava laattaturkki. Etuosan vähäisempi karvoitus takaa sen että koira pystyy liikkumaan välillä vaikeassakin maastossa – miettikääpäs kuinka vaikeaa olisi jos koiralla olisi hyvin paksu, pitkä ja laatoittunut turkki myös edessä – siinä ei paljon kiipeiltäisi vuorilla. Kuten aiemmin sanoin , kaikki Bergamascossa on tarkoituksenmukaista, edellä mainittujen seikkojen lisäksi Bergamascolla on muun muassa hyvin pitkät silmäripset, jotka pitävät tukan pois silmiltä –kaikki Bergamascossa on hyvin suunniteltua päästä varpaisiin saakka, onhan se italialainen, siis taattua designia.
Bergamascon luonne
Bergamasco on hyvin nopea oppimaan ja omaksumaan uusia asioita, nopeana oppijana se inhoaa toistoja ja Bergamascoa opetettaessa onkin hyvä muistaa edetä vauhdilla, sillä liioilla toistoilla se vaan lopettaa tekemisen kyllästyttyään koko touhuun. Bergamasco on parhaimmillaan lajeissa, joissa se saa käyttää omaa päätään; se tykkää tehdä ja ratkaista asioita ja paras palkinto sille on yhdessäolo omistajansa kanssa.
Bergamasco kiintyy perheeseensä , sillä ei ole varsinaisesti yhtä omistajaa vaan koko perhe on sen lauma jota sen on suojeltava. Bergamasco on loistava lasten kanssa – onnellinen on se lapsi joka saa kasvaa Bergamascon kanssa – parempaa ystävää ja vahtia ei voi kuvitella. Bergamasco on lempeä, pitkäpinnainen, aina valmis lähtemään ja touhuamaan omistajansa kanssa, mutta osaa tarvittaessa rauhoittua ja onkin kotona sisätiloissa hyvin huomaamaton. Bergamascon sielunelämää on itseasiassa hyvin vaikeaa kuvailla – toisaalta se on leikkisä ja iloinen ja toisaalta hyvinkin tosikko; johtunee sen työkoirataustasta, työ ja oman ihmisen kanssa touhuaminen on sille kaikki kaikessa . Turkin hoito

Turkinhoito on helpompaa kuin monella muulla rodulla, kun pohjatyön pentuna tekee hyvin, loppuaika onkin helppoa ja käsittää lähinnä risujen keräilystä turkista. Bergamascosta ei lähde karvaa paitsi pentuna karvanvaihdon yhteydessä. Usein kysytään voiko Bergamascoa pestä. Bergamascoa voi ja sitä pitää pestä –turkki ei millään tavoin vahingoitu pesussa – usein kuulee päinvastaista väitettävän, mutta se ei siis pidä paikkaansa – turkin voi pestä aina kun koira tuntuu likaiselle.
Bergamasco tänään
Pitkään Bergamascot olivat tunnettuja vain Italiassa lähinnä Bergamon laaksoissa. Onneksi rotu alkoi pikkuhiljaa leviämään muuallekin ja onkin jo melko tunnettu koko Euroopassa sekä Usa:ssa. Kun rotuun tutustuu ennakkoluulottomasti, ei siltä tieltä ole paluuta; niinhän se menee että kerran Bergamasco aina Bergamasco - sellaista ystävyyttä ja sielujen sympatiaa on vaikea kuvitella muiden rotujen kanssa – ne yksinkertaisesti lukevat joka eleesi, äänenpainosi ja ilmeesi . Mikään ei jää Bergamascolta huomaamatta ja onko se sitten hyvä vai paha – riippuu tilanteesta, mutta älä koskaan luule että pystyt huijaamaan koiraasi, päinvastoin, se luultavasti vetää sinua nenästä minkä ehtii ja nauraa sitten takanapäin.
